Prologue – Start of Something New
“Sungman Oppa!” Seohyun greeted her manager cheerfully.
“Anyonghaseyo, Oppa.”
“Anyong, Seohyun-ah. Are you ready?” her manager asked before taking her bag and helping her to their car.
“Ne but where are we going? I’ve been asking Codi-Unnie but she’s not answering me,” Seohyun said while arranging her things in the car and finding a comfortable sitting position.
“You don’t know?” her manager asked clearly shocked that Seohyun was not told beforehand.
“Know what, Oppa?” Seohyun innocently asked.
“You’ll be doing an interview,” her manager said resigned to the fact that he’s the one who will have to explain the entire situation.
“Interview? By myself? About what, Oppa?” Seohyun rapidly asked.
“The management thinks that it is time for you to step up. They want the public to know you not just SNSD’s Seohyun, the calm and collected maknae of the number one girl group in Korea. They want more of that,” her manager started to explain.
“By doing an interview?” Seohyun asked completely confused of what’s happening.
“That’s just a part of it. Remember what Yuri and Sunny did before joining Invincible Youth?” her manager asked slowly trying to explain to Seohyun what her new project is.
“They met the PD-nim for an interview. Wait! Am I joining a variety show?” Seohyun shockingly asked. ‘That’s absurd. Everyone knows how awkward I am without my Unnies. A variety show is for people like Heechul Oppa or Yuri Unnie even Sica Unnie can do better than me in those kind of shows,’ Seohyun thinks.
“You’re right. You’ll be doing a variety show in MBC,” her manager admitted.
“Alone?”
“No, of course not. You’ll be partnered with someone.”
“But it’ll be very awkward,” Seohyun stated. She’s beginning to feel nervous. “What show, Oppa?”
“Don’t panic. Just think of this as a new learning experience plus it’ll be your chance to promote yourself,” her manager said obviously trying to make her feel less nervous.
“What show, Oppa?” she asked again feeling somewhat suspicious to the fact that her manager is purposely avoiding the topic of what her new show is.
“We Got Married,” her manager answered quietly but enough for Seohyun to hear.
“What? But I’m only 20, I can’t be married. I don’t know what to do. How will I act? I don’t even know how to be a girl friend let alone a wife. Oppa, it’ll be a disaster. Can the other Unnies do it instead?” Rapper Seohyun was in full charge. She doesn’t know what to think. Though she is grateful for the chance her company is giving her but doing WGM is too much. ‘Don’t they know that I’m not interested in boys? How many times did I tell in an interview that I don’t have an ideal man? Why in the world would they put me in WGM?’ Seohyun screamed in her mind.
“You think I don’t know that? Do you know how shocked I was when I heard the news? I tried to persuade them but they won’t relent,” her manager said obviously feeling sorry for her.
“Yoona Unnie. Yoona Unnie can do it,” Seohyun said. Her mind is formulating different ways to avoid doing the show.
“Yoona was casted in Family Outing 2, remember?” her manager said looking at her and saying through his eyes that she can’t escape this predicament.
“Sooyoung Unnie, how about Sooyoung Unnie? She’s the one who wants to get married early. Or Hyoyeon Unnie, she’s very funny. She’ll fit in the show. Sica Unnie or Fany Unnie. Taeyeon Unnie can do it again. Every one will do better than me, Oppa,” Seohyun said still thinking for other alternatives.
“Taeyeon has Chinchin, Sica is busy with her musical, Sooyoung, Hyoyeon and Fany will circulate on other variety shows. They are good with people so the company wants them to be free to guest on every other show. Besides, the company wants you, Seohyun. They want you to step out of the shadows of your Unnies. You need to grow up and be independent. You can’t hide behind your Unnies forever,” her manager explained.
“I’m out of options,” Seohyun dejectedly said before pouting and looking at the car’s windows.
“Joohyun-ah, I think it’ll be good for you. Trust me. You’ll learn a lot of new things. Things that even your Unnies can’t teach you. Maybe you’ll find your first boyfriend there,” her manager said purposely teasing her to lift her mood.
“Oppa! I’m not interested in dating. I need to focus on my work as well as my studies. I have many things I want to do,” Seohyun said still looking at the sceneries outside the car.
“Then just treat this show as another work too. You’ll never know what will happen. You’ll enjoy doing this show. I’m sure of it. By the way, Ara will arrive today, right?” her manager asked trying to steer the topic away from the show and into things that he’s sure will definitely make Seohyun happy.
“Ne, Ara Unnie will be here later,” Seohyun said instantly forgetting her current worries at the mention of her favorite Unnie besides the Soshi Unnies.
“I wonder what her reaction will be to Fany’s surprise?” her manager asked happy that Seohyun seems to be getting alright.
“She’ll like it,” Seohyun said surely while imagining her Unnie’s reaction.
“How about her reaction when she finds out about your new show?” her manager teases her again.
“I think she’ll be very surprised,” Seohyun said upon remembering her new show. Strangely, she doesn’t feel bad anymore. ‘Maybe Sungman Oppa is right. I should just treat it as a show. It’s my chance to learn new things after all.’
“I bet she’ll feel bad,” her manager said.
“For me?” Seohyun asked.
“No, for your future husband. Even I feel bad for him,” her manager said laughing at her confused face.
“Oppa!” Seohyun whined before crossing her arms and glaring at her manager which only makes him laugh at her harder.

Meanwhile at the Incheon Airport…
“Director Min!” Ara looked around trying to find the one who’s calling her.
“Yoonshik Oppa!” Ara said smiling at her personal secretary.
“It’s nice having you back here in Korea, Director Min,” Yoonshik said before taking her bags and helping her to her luggages.
“Oppa, just call me Ara. It’s just the two of us here,” Ara said while failing to try to help Yoonshik in carrying her bags because of the latter’s firm hold on it.
“But I can’t just call you by your name casually. You are my boss,” Yoonshik replied after successfully putting her luggage at the trunk of the car.
“Then as your boss, I’m ordering you to call me by my name when it’s just the two of us. It’ll be strange to call you Secretary Kim when in fact I’ve been calling you Yoonshik Oppa since I was a child, “ Ara said sitting comfortably at the back of the car and fiddling with her cell phone.
“You got me there,” Yoonshik said looking at her through the rear view mirror and seeing Ara smiling at him knowing that she won an argument yet again.
“Oppa can you take me to the office directly?” Ara said while looking at some company files.
“I’m sorry but I can’t. I was ordered to take you to your house directly. No detours. Besides you need to rest,” Yoonshik said.
“Even if you take me home, I’ll just take another car to get to the office. My condo unit is just 10 minutes away from the company building,” Ara said.
“I’m not taking you to your condo unit,” Yoonshik replied while stealing a glance to gauge Ara’s reaction.
“What? You’re taking me to my family house? That’s too big for me and it’s far from the company.” Ara is obviously confused. ‘There’s something going on here,’ she thinks before studying Yoonshik Oppa’s facial expressions.
“I’m not taking you to your family house either. You will be staying at a new house. A dorm exactly,” Yoonshik explained purposely readying himself for the outburst.
“A dorm? Are you out of your mind? Why would I stay at a dorm when I have perfectly fine condo units here in Seoul? Even a hotel is better than a dorm. Did my dad put you up for this? What’s he planning now?” Ara asked feeling annoyed. If there’s one thing that can get on her nerves, it is not telling her something beforehand and leaving her surprised by the outcome. Planning is her nature and she doesn’t like it if someone even if it’s her dad ruining her perfectly laid plans.
“No, your dad doesn’t know about this but even if he knows I’m sure he will approve of it. Someone who has more convincing powers put me up for this. I think it will be good for you. Its bad being too workaholic, you know. I think you’ll have more fun at your new dorm,” Yoonshik explained.
“Where’s the dorm?” Ara asked. She’s having an inkling as to who’s behind this plan. After all, there is only one group of people that can make Yoonshik Oppa do something that she won’t approve of.
“Cheongdam-dong,” Yoonshik answered.
“Fany Unnie. It’s Fany Unnie right?” Ara confirmed the answer just by looking at the guilty expression of her assistant.
“Aargh! Why do you want me to live with them? They’ll make my life a living hell. I won’t be able to do my work correctly. They’ll distract me and make me forget all of my responsibilities. They always want me to just have fun. I might go overdosed in happiness and ended crazy and useless. After that, my dad will blame you for putting me into this in the first place. He will lose his only heir. Remember, Dana doesn’t like to inherit the company,” Ara complained non-stop just to get out of this crazy situation.
“Stop being overly dramatic. You’ve been watching many TV shows lately. They’ll be fine. Spending time with them will help you relieve some of the stress from your work. They’ll be your endorphins. Besides, you totally love them,” Yoonshik tried to pacify her.
“I do. I totally love them. They are part of my family. SM Entertainment is my second family but that doesn’t change the fact that they all drive me nuts most of the time,” Ara said slowly resigning to the fact that she can’t escape.
“That’s what family do. They drive each other crazy and in return that makes life more exciting and worth it. Trust me, it’ll all be fine,” Yoonshik said.
“But…” Ara start to say something before she was interrupted by the ringing sound of her phone. ‘That’s weird. No one is supposed to know that I’m here already,’ Ara thought before picking up her phone.
“Hello?” Ara answered.
“Uri aegiya!” the voice on the other line greeted her cheerfully.
“I think you got the wrong number, Mister,” Ara said annoyingly. She already knows who the caller is. There is only person brave enough to call her stupid nicknames.
“Uri aegiya, why do you sound so off? Did someone annoy you?” the other line sweetly asked.
“You got that right,” Ara said. Listening to him makes her vomit. The sound of his childish voice causes goose bumps all over her body.
“Who is it? Tell me, aegiya,” the voice said.
“Do you really want to know? I’m currently talking to him,” Ara answered.
“Come on, is that how you greet your favorite Oppa. We haven’t talked for months,” the voice said.
“Heechul Oppa, how many times do I have to tell you to stop calling me with your pet names? It’s creepy! Save it for your girl friends alright,” Ara said.
“Aegiya, how many times do I have to tell you that it doesn’t matter if you like it or not, I will still call you whatever pet names that I want for as long as I like. I’m your Oppa. You should listen to me,” Heechul said before laughing.
“Aargh! You’re so infuriating, Oppa,” Ara said giving up. Heechul Oppa is a lost case. No matter what she says, he will just do whatever suited him.
“Anyway, where are you? I know you’re in Korea already. Let’s dine out, my treat” Heechul invited her.
“How did you know I’m here in Korea?” Ara asked.
“I’m here at the company. I heard some staffs talking about how you’re here a week earlier than schedule.” Heechul answered.
“SM staffs are really admirable. My flight was supposed to be a secret. Even the press doesn’t know that I’m arriving today. They were informed that I will be here together with Juno and Yuki next week. I wonder where SM got their information.” Ara wondered.
“Don’t change the topic. Just answer my question and tell me where you are,” Heechul said.
“I’m currently being kidnapped, Oppa. Can you help me?” Ara calmly said.
“What did you just said?” Heechul shouted.
“Relax Oppa. If I’m being kidnapped they wouldn’t let me answer my phone right?” Ara said laughing at him.
“Explain this to me clearly,” Heechul said seriously.
“Fany Unnie has this idea that since I’m gonna be very lonely in my condo, she thinks that it’s better for me to be transferred to their dorm,” Ara explained remembering her current situation.
“That’s a great idea,” Heechul said.
“Oppa! Not you too,” Ara whined on the line.
“Well if it is possible I have already done the same thing,” Heechul said on the line.
“That’s disgusting! You live with Suju Oppas and I’ve seen your dorm,” Ara said obviously creeped out.
“I said if it is possible. You need someone to live with. You tend to forget things when you are working and that includes taking care of yourself. I heard about what happen in New York,” Heechul said.
“I know. I already apologized for that. Do I have to say sorry to you too?” Ara said remembering her accident in New York.
“No but you need to promise me something,” Heechul said.
“Why do you sound so serious suddenly?” Ara replied smiling.
“Ara-yah.”
“Alright, what is it?” Ara asked although she already knows what Heechul Oppa will say.
“Promise me that you’ll take better care of yourself,” Heechul ordered.
“I will Oppa. What happen in New York won’t be repeated again. So don’t worry and just stay as my childish Oppa and everything will be fine,” Ara answered.
“That’s great! I’m so excited for you. You staying at Soshi’s dorm will be like an endless sleep-over. It’ll be so much fun,” Heechul said returning to his jovial state.
“Thanks Oppa. You really are the best,” Ara said.
“Of course, I’m Kim Heechul,” Heechul proudly said.
--------------------
A few weeks later at Hongdae, FNC Building, early in the morning.
“What is the meeting all about?” Yonghwa asked his manager. He hardly slept. His schedule finished at dawn and he felt that he just closed his eyes when his manager wakes him and his band mates up for an emergency meeting.
“Hyung, why did you call us so early in the morning? Did we do something wrong?” Jungshin asked their manager too.
“It’s not like that. The president wants to talk to all of you,” their manager said. After that they all wait for the arrival of their company president while trying to stay awake and focused. A few minutes later, he arrived.
“Good morning guys. Have you slept well?” the president asked.
The boys just look at him sheepishly.
“I’m sorry for calling you this early. I know that you have been having a tiresome schedule but this matter is really important,” their president said.
“It’s alright, Mr. President,” Yonghwa answered for the boys.
“Well then let’s start. As you all know yesterday Yonghwa filmed his first episode in WGM. I heard that you’re partner is none other that SoNyuhShiDae’s maknae, Seohyun-ssi, right?” their president confirmed the answer with Yonghwa’s nod.
“Now we entered you in WGM in hopes of having opportunities to promote CNBLUE more. It is one of the steps in making the public know not just Yonghwa but all of you. Fortunately, you are partnered with Seohyun. We all know that SoNyuhShiDae is immensely popular. Their fanbase is scary. Because of that, we evaluated the pros and cons of the situation,” their president paused to read the boys expressions. After seeing them thoroughly focused in to what he is saying, he decided to continue.
“When I heard who your partner is, I actually thought of pulling you out of the show. Understand this guys, Seohyun is the maknae of the number one girl group in Korea. Her fans and the fans of her entire group are most protective of her. Also, her image is that of a pure, innocent girl who is fragile and unattainable. Not to mention that she belongs to the number one entertainment company in Korea, the SM Entertainment. Do you realize how big of a problem it is? Just one wrong move not only from Yonghwa but also from the three of you and it will all blow to our faces. You are rookies and the public has been keenly observing you. Now that Yonghwa joined the show the public will be watching all of your every movement more closely than before especially the fans, especially her fans. Do you understand?” their president asked.
“Yes. So that does mean that you’re pulling me out?” Yonghwa politely asked.
“No, of course not. I will be the world’s greatest fool if I let you pass out in this one of a kind opportunity. I just want you to know what you’re getting into. Because you’re not just getting involved with SM, you will also be involved in MPY Group of Companies. This can be a big help for us or it can be a great disaster depending on how you will behave towards her,” their president said.
“Wait, how is doing WGM get me to be involved with MPY?” Yonghwa asked obviously confused.
“Do you know what MPY do? It’s history and all?” their president asked.
“All we know is that they are the second biggest company in the world, next to Microsoft Corporation and that their heirs are here in Korea,” Minhyuk said.
“What you said is right but there’s more to it than that. Mr. Choi?” their president said signaling for their manager.
“Ok guys, let me explain to you all about MPY Group of Companies,” their manager said. “Listen carefully because this knowledge can make or break your career.”
“Alright, we’re all ears,” Yonghwa said.
“As you all know, MPY Group of Companies is the second largest as well as richest company in the world. Many rumors have been circulating that they are planning to merge their company with Microsoft Corporation which will make them even richer. MPY was founded by three best friends namely Min Dong Jae, Park Sung Hyun and Yoon Ki Tae. They are known as the three Gods of the Business World. They are all half Koreans half Americans. MPY is divided into three main branches and each branch deals with its assigned specialty. The Min Branch focuses on Information Technology, Multimedia and Entertainment, and Telecommunications. The Park Branch focuses on Electronics, Malls, Hospitals and Construction Firms. Meanwhile, the Yoon Branch deals with Hotel and Restaurants, Cars and Banking. In all fields of business that I mention, they are currently the number one. They have many affiliates with renowned company and you can’t even imagine their influence and popularity in the business world. They are one of a kind,” their manager explained in detail.
“Wow! They are scary,” Jungshin said obviously impressed by what their manager said.
“Wow indeed. Imagine how lucky we will be if MPY gives their support for our company. We will be renowned too,” Minhyuk said.
“That kind of company can’t be all good. If they are as powerful as you said, I’m sure there are some conspiracies that we don’t know,” Jonghyun said.
“Hyung, you’ve been watching so many action films lately,” Jungshin commented.
“Don’t misunderstand. MPY is as clean as water in the mountain river. MPY’s benchmark is discipline and fairness. They are known to be extremely fair. They don’t do any things that will destroy their reputation. Even their statements of assets and liabilities are open to the public if they wish to know it. That’s how transparent they are. They pride themselves of being the company that doesn’t hide anything,” their manager explained further.
“How does that concern me joining WGM?” Yonghwa asked.
“Well here’s the thing, Yoon Ki Tae has three children, two girls and one boy, and the girls are already working in their company. He’s youngest child, Yoon Yuki is the heir that Yoon Ki Tae chose. Yoon Yuki will be taking his father’s position in the near future. Meanwhile, Park Sung Hyun only has one child, Park Juno so it is only natural that he is the heir that will take over Park Sung Hyun’s position. Lastly, Min Dong Jae has two daughters, Min Ara and Min Dana. Min Ara is the eldest so Min Dong Jae chose her to take over his position. Those three are here in Korea for their on-site training. They will be the directors of the three branches.”
“I have a question. Why do those three are here again? I mean, if they will be the directors shouldn’t they be in New York where the main office is located?” Minhyuk asked.
“Well, we only heard rumors but apparently the three Gods decided to send the Golden Trio as the press like them to call here in Korea. They are very conservative and it is only natural since they are Koreans. Park Juno and Yoon Yuki are the same age as you Yonghwa and Min Ara is younger by a year. The three Gods want their children to experience how it’s like to operate a business here in Korea. They also want to keep them away from the liberties that the people their age do in New York. I think that they thought that if they are here in Korea, there will be fewer temptations and the three will be more focused on their work than anything else.”
“That still doesn’t answer my question as to how will I be involved with them,” Yonghwa said.
“MPY endorses other companies. I mean they give them their support. If you are endorsed by them, you will surely be a great hit. They also endorse artists. It’s only natural since they are in the entertainment business as well. If you want to be endorsed, you will send your resume and then you will go through a series of audition just like when you want to be a trainee for a certain entertainment company,” their manager said.
“So you want us to try the audition?” Jonghyun asked.
“Yes but not now. That’s not the main point here, guys,” their manager said.
“Then what is the main point?” Minhyuk asked.
“The one that handles the endorsement of artists is the Min Branch. MPY chose SM Entertainment as one of the company that they are endorsing. It means that before they debut an artists, they will need to pass the audition from MPY. That is like hitting two birds with one stone. You’ll be an artist from the number one entertainment company in Korea as well as you will be endorse by MPY. Min Ara, the director of the Min Branch is also a shareholder in SM. Do you know who Min Ara’s closest friends in Korea?” their manager asked.
“Who?” Jungshin asked.
“SNSD?” Yonghwa asked.
“You’re right. SM artists are really close with Min Ara. In one of her interview, she mentioned that SM Entertainment is her second family and she is closest to SNSD. We also heard that she lives with them now,” their manager said.
“So you want me to be really careful as to not sabotage our impending audition with MPY?” Yonghwa asked.
“Besides that, we want you to be careful and not to do any inappropriate things to Seohyun. Not only the fans and her label mates but Min Ara will be watching you as well. Min Ara is known to be very protective of those she holds dear to her especially those that are younger than her,” their manager explained.
“Alright, I’ll do my best,” Yonghwa said.
“Hyung, if MPY is already endorsing SM why do we still need to take the audition?” Minhyuk asked.
“MPY only chooses one company in one business field and they chose SM in the entertainment field but that doesn’t mean that they can’t endorse other artists from other companies. It only means that all of SM artists are being endorsed by MPY,” their manager said.
“Do you know other artists that they are endorsing?” Jungshin asked.
“There are many, all of them are really successful. Bae Yong Jun, Choi Ji Woo, Son Ye Jin and others but I heard that Min Ara changed the context of the audition. She is very picky as they say. At first, it’s her father that chooses the artists and for her father if you are really talented then you are chosen. This time, it’s Min Ara who will choose and rumors are spreading that the screening is really tough. Aside from the SM artists and the artists that are chosen already only 2AM, KARA and 2NE1 passed the audition this time,” their manager said.
“Who are the other singers that are chosen before?” Yonghwa asked.
“Big Bang, Se7en, Lee Hyori, Rain, JYP, GOD are the only one that I remember. There are many more but now that the screening process is very hard we want you to do your best,” their manager said.
“Yes, we will do our best. Right guys?” Yonghwa said.
“Yes,” the three answered.
“Now let’s ready to practice. We have a show later,” Yonghwa said ordering his band mates.
“That’s the spirit!” their manager said smiling at their enthusiasm.
‘I’ll be walking on eggshells from now on. Not only do I have a wife that is as blank as a white paper when it comes to relationship, I also need to be careful of her fans, my fans and all of the people not only in Korea but in the whole world. To top it all, she’s close friends to the most influential people too. Now what do I get myself into?’ Yonghwa thought while ordering his team to start the practice.
